BC Oral Health Amalgamation Project: Registrant Update

February 16, 2022

The four regulatory colleges that oversee 15,000 dental professionals in BC are working towards amalgamation to create a single oral health regulatory college. The amalgamation partners are the College of Dental Hygienists of BC (CDHBC), College of Dental Technicians of BC (CDTBC), the College of Dental Surgeons of BC (CDSBC) and College of Denturists of BC (CDBC).

We are excited about the opportunity to create a truly new regulatory body for oral health professions that will embrace the framework for modernization of health professions regulation in BC. The new regulator will ensure patient safety, increase public confidence through transparency and accountability, and ultimately achieve better health outcomes for patients and the public. The increased collaboration will allow us to support the coordination of safe, team-based care for patients and the broader community.

We've developed this short video to explain why we are pursuing amalgamation, and explain how it will roll out.

Project Status

Dr. Chris Hacker has been appointed Interim Registrar for the new oral health college by the Transition Steering Committee, which is made up of two board members from each of the four partner colleges. Along with support from the other oral health college registrars, Chris will continue to serve as the registrar and CEO for the College of Dental Surgeons of BC as well as in his oversight role for the amalgamation project.

We will provide updates on our journey towards being a single oral health regulator on the amalgamation project website and through updates such as this.

This message is a summary of a more detailed update for registrants, which is now posted on the project website.
