We're All Ears: Listening Sessions Begin 3 November

The College will be hosting a series of “listening sessions” over the coming months to hear from registrants on a number of key issues, such as quality assurance, ethics, the corporatization of dentistry and more. This supports our new policy development framework that includes early consultation with registrants and stakeholders. The first CDSBC Listening Session will take place in Victoria on Thursday, 3 November from 6-8 pm at the Victoria Convention Centre, with a light meal served at 5:30.

Public Member Vacancies on CDSBC Commitees

We are currently seeking public members to serve on the Inquiry, Quality Assurance and Registration committees. Public members offer unique perspectives from outside the profession and their insight helps the College regulate dentistry in the public interest.

If you know someone who would be interested in joining a CDSBC committee, please encourage them to apply. To learn more about the expectations and requirements of committee members, click the link below.

Practice Tip: The Treatment Plan Trap

Why every dentist should determine their own diagnosis and treatment plan

Some dentists may fall into the trap of following through with another practitioner's treatment plan without having completed their own diagnosis. Don't get caught. Read Dr. Moores' tip on what you should do if you are asked to provide treatment prescribed by another dentist.

Reminder: Consultation on Trade Names Open Until 17 October

Any time a dentist or dental practice uses a name that is not their registered legal name, they are using a trade name. Trade names are a form of advertising and are addressed in Part 12.15 of Bylaw 12 – Advertising and Promotional Activities.

While the College is occasionally called upon to adjudicate copyright or trademark disputes, we are not the appropriate body to do so. The Board is therefore proposing to change the way the College addresses trade names. Under the proposal, the current practice of providing approval for trade names will be discontinued.

You are invited to submit your comments before Monday, 17 October 2016 to consultation@cdsbc.org (please put "trade names" in the subject line). More information about this consultation is available at the link below.

Deadline to Comply with Bylaw 12 is 1 January

The deadline to have your practice's advertising and promotional activities in compliance with the revised bylaw is 1 January 2017.

Key elements from the revised bylaw:

  • requirement for dentists to identify in their advertising whether they are general dentists or specialists
  • restrictions on how registrants can refer to their non-dental degrees and continuing education courses
  • prohibition on the advertising of free or discounted services and rewards programs, which may induce the public to seek unnecessary treatments or procedures
  • preservation of the ability to provide pro-bono services to those in need
  • requirement to clearly identify the names of registrants who own and/or provide services or derive income at a dental office

The College has published Bylaw 12 Interpretive Guidelines to assist registrants in understanding and applying the bylaw to advertising and promotional activities. More information is available at the link below.
