The College has been notified that a company providing training in dental sedation is providing incorrect information about the inspection process for moderate sedation.
The company's website wrongly states that the College has begun inspections of practices providing moderate oral or IV sedation and that "many practices have been found to be non-compliant and are having to suspend their delivery of sedation to patients until all deficiencies are corrected." This company is offering to inspect practices at a cost of $999.
If your practice provides moderate sedation, here is what you need to know:
- The College's inspections of moderate sedation facilities have not yet started.
- Only practices that provide moderate IV (parenteral) sedation will be inspected.
- Information about how to meet the requirements are set out in the document
Minimal and Moderate Sedation Services in Dentistry, and detailed checklists will be provided to facilities affected by this change.
- Any shortcomings will be addressed on a case-by-case basis and the company's claim that the College has been imposing numerous immediate suspensions is false.
- Despite the offer being made by this company, an inspection provided by a third party (that is, someone other than the College) does not result in facility approval. Only the College can grant approval following an inspection, and all information regarding inspection criteria will be available to registrants and the public on the College website.
We regret any inconvenience or anxiety this information has caused our registrants.
If you have questions, please contact Natasha Tibbo, Sedation Program Coordinator, at
ntibbo@cdsbc.org or at 604-736-3621.

The College recently held two webinars that offered younger dentists and certified dental assistants the opportunity to join the conversation on QA. The webinars were designed to collect input from these groups, both of whom were under-represented at the listening sessions. Participants responded to questions such as: What is the best way to maintain and improve your clinical skills and dental knowledge? How do you obtain CE credits? Should specific courses be required for registrants?
You can read their responses to these questions in the webinar reports on the College website. These will be considered by the working group that will be recommending improvements to the QA program.

This is a reminder that the College has posted proposed amendments to Part 12 of the bylaws dealing with advertising and promotional activities. The proposed changes are limited to qualifications, continuing dental education, titles and designations as laid out in sections 12.08 – 12.11.
Under the current bylaw, references to qualifications, continuing dental education, titles or designations other than specifying whether the person is a general dentist or certified specialist are restricted or prohibited entirely. The proposed change allows for them to be made, provided they are in unabbreviated form and include the year, the jurisdiction, and the name of the granting organization.
You are invited to submit your comments before Wednesday, 12 July 2017 to
consultation@cdsbc.org (please put "Bylaw 12" in the subject line).
