The deadline to have your practice's advertising and promotional activities in compliance with the revised bylaw is 1 January 2017.
Advertising for dental services needs to be clear, verifiable, understandable, and cannot be misleading, incomplete or deceptive. Under the new bylaw, dentists are only permitted to advertise whether they are general dentists or specialists.
Dentists should be careful when advertising in popular directory services, such as Yellow Pages, to ensure that they are not listing their practice under categories that are not designated specialties (such as teeth whitening and cosmetic dentistry) and are therefore misleading to the public
The Ethics Committee has created Interpretive Guidelines to assist registrants in understanding and applying Part 12 of CDSBC Bylaws regarding advertising and promotional activities.

The standards document
Minimal & Moderate Sedation Services in Dentistry (Non-Hospital Facilities) has been updated. The changes were proposed by the Sedation Committee and approved by the Board in June 2016.
While most of the changes are for clarification purposes only, there are two changes of note:
- A section has been added that sets out the requirements for the oral use of Ketamine by pediatric dentists.
- Dentists who administer moderate sedation must have mock emergency drills at least every three months (previously it was six months).

It is every dentist's responsibility to ensure that staff are adequately trained in IPAC procedures and that the necessary supplies and equipment are available, fully operational, up-to-date and routinely monitored for efficacy.
In this practice tip, Dr. Hacker discusses the importance of training and protocols outlined in the
Infection Prevention and Control Guideline (PDF). The guidelines give dental health care providers the principles and standards to inform and implement safe and effective infection prevention and control measures in their practice.
