Last Chance: Survey on Policy Development Process

The College is making changes to the way we develop policy. We intend to engage in policy conversations earlier, and to involve more stakeholders when possible. Our goal is to produce policy that serves and protects the public and is in keeping with the realities of the profession.

We want to hear from you. The survey on CDSBC's draft policy development process is open until Friday, 29 April.

We also held two webinars earlier this month. You can listen to the facilitator walk through each of the four steps of the draft policy process (running time 5:11) on the policy development page on the website.

CPR Requirements for Facilities with Sedation

We would like to clarify the requirements for basic life support (CPR) and advanced life support (ACLS, PALS) certification for registrants and staff of facilities that provide any level of sedation.

  • The current CPR standard is the health care provider level certification.
  • Renewal for BLS and ALS must be every 2 years regardless of the expiry issued by the course provider.
  • CPR, ACLS and PALS courses must have a hands-on component. Courses entirely online are not appropriate. The Heart and Stroke Foundation states that, "substantial hands-on practice is needed to meet psychomotor and nontechnical/leadership skill performance objectives."

Addenda to the Deep Sedation and General Anaesthesia Standards and Guidelines

The Sedation and General Anaesthesia (GA) Services Committee recently reviewed the Deep Sedation Standards and Guidelines and the GA Standards and Guidelines. The committee identified necessary changes and updated the documents to current practice standards. The Board approved the changes at the February meeting.

The addenda were mailed to facilities authorized to provide deep sedation or general anaesthesia the week of 29 March 2016 and are available at the link below.

If you have any questions regarding these changes please contact sedation@cdsbc.org

New Practice Tips from CDSBC Staff Dentists

Practice Tip #5: Opioid prescribing (Dr. Meredith Moores)

It is recognized that over-prescribing of opioid pharmaceuticals by health care professionals is a problem. Dr. Moores provides questions that healthcare professionals should consider before prescribing controlled prescription drugs to patients.

Practice Tip #6: Patients with cognitive decline (Dr. Sujay Mehta)

A patient with cognitive decline was scheduled for an appointment by their adult child. When the dentist presented treatment options to the patient without informing the other family members, it resulted in a complaint. Dr. Mehta outlines lessons from the case to emphasize the importance of communication between office and clinical staff.
