NEWS BULLETIN
The CDSBC website is the go-to place for all College-related information, and both registrants and the public want quick access to a range of information. We have overhauled the website and relaunched it this week.
New features include:
- Enhanced
Registrant Lookup (formerly the Directory of Dentists)
- News organized by topic on the home page
-
CDSBC Library – for forms and key documents
- A responsive design that displays content for desktops, tablets and smartphones
- Ability to search, log in or access the Registrant Lookup from any page
For an introduction to the new website, see
'New Website Highlights' (PDF). We hope you will agree that this site is an improvement on the old one. Please send any comments to
communications@cdsbc.org
Note: links that worked with the previous website may now be broken. Type key words into the search bar to find what you need.

The consultation period for the draft policy document
Boundaries in the Practitioner-Patient Relationship ends
30 September 2015. The document outlines when it is appropriate to establish a practitioner-patient relationship.
Note: with the launch of the new website, earlier links to this document will no longer work. You should use the link above, or go to the consultation section of the new website.
Registrants have told us that the policy as written is not workable. CDSBC President Dr. David Tobias sent an
email to all registrants to explain that all feedback received to date will be provided to the Board in advance of its next meeting on 12 September. The consultation process will close on 30 September.

In the June issue of
Contact News Bulletin, we reported that the Board approved the new bylaw on Advertising & Promotional Activities (part 12). We subsequently made a minor change to section 12.14.2 of the bylaw, to make it consistent with requirements around how dentists can advertise their degrees, as set out in sections 12.8 and 12.9.
The Bylaw has been filed with the Ministry of Health but has not yet come into force. Note that there will be a transition period to allow registrants time to apply the new bylaws to their advertising/promotional material. The Ethics Committee is also preparing interpretive guidelines to assist registrants in understanding what the new bylaws will mean in practice.

Two schedules to the CDBSC bylaws have been revised: Schedule G: Tariff of costs (investigations) and Schedule H: Tariff of costs (hearings of Discipline Committee). Two committees have the authority to assess costs following a complaint investigation (Inquiry Committee) and against an unsuccessful party following a discipline hearing (Discipline Committee).
The new Schedules were filed with the Minister of Health and came into force 19 August 2015.

In his May 2015 memo to all registrants, President Dr. David Tobias addressed the defamation lawsuit that the College, under the name of Registrar/CEO Jerome Marburg, had launched against a lawyer.
This case was scheduled to be heard in BC Supreme Court this month. We are pleased to announce that this case has now settled. The defendant in the lawsuit has provided a letter of apology recognizing that he made untrue and ill-advised statements and has retracted them. He has also agreed to pay damages and a contribution towards legal costs.

CDSBC has received several enquiries asking if CDAs need the Orthodontic Module designation to provide Invisalign services to patients. We remind registrants that services related to orthodontic treatment do require that the CDA hold the
Orthodontic designation and must be delegated and supervised by the prescribing dentist. Please refer to the
Guide to CDA Services on the CDSBC website.

You will receive your invitation to the Complaints and Discipline Information Session by email shortly. Thank you to the more than 800 registrants who took the time to complete the pre-event survey; your feedback is being used to shape the agenda for the evening.
Registration for this event is free, and you will be invited to attend online or in person. Most of the in-person seats will be reserved for dentists for the simple reason that the vast majority of complaints involve dentists. There are a limited number of seats reserved for CDAs, but
all current registrants (dentists, dental therapists and CDAs) may participate in the session via webcast, and will be able to submit questions in real time by email to the session moderator.

reminder memo will be mailed to all dentists and CDAs whose three-year continuing education requirements are incomplete and ending 31 December 2015.
If you have any CE credits to submit, you can
log in to your online account
to enter your credits. If you do not meet your three-year CE requirements, you will be unable to renew your registration/certification in 2016.

This Contact News Bulletin is distributed to registrants for the College of Dental Surgeons of BC. It is one of CDSBC's official methods of notification to its registrants. Registrants are responsible for reading College publications to ensure that they are aware of current standards, policies and guidelines.
