The need to remain current has long been a cornerstone of self-regulating professions.
Dentists and certified dental assistants are required to maintain a minimum number of hours of mandatory continuing education in order to renew their registration or certification to practice each year.
A minimum of 36 credits is required for CDAs and 90 for dentists. Detailed requirements, including course eligibility, are outlined in the Continuing Education Requirements.
The College’s Standards of Practice for dentists and certified dental assistants are an important foundation of continuing competence. The Standards broadly describe the responsibilities of dentists and CDAs in providing dental care to the public and practitioners are encouraged to use these as a form of self-reflection to plan their continuing education activities.
